HOW IS THE DA VINCI USED?
The Robotic Cardiac Surgery (also known as the da Vinci) is used for a number of different heart-related procedures, including valve surgery, coronary artery bypass, cardiac tissue ablation, heart defect repair, tumour removal and an irregular heart beat. The da Vinci robot is controlled manually by a surgeon in a separate room from the patient. The surgeon manoeuvres the systems robotic arms whilst viewing a high-resolution endoscopic camera, that is inserted through an incision (an incision: a surgical cut made in skin or flesh). The robot allows the surgeon to continue the procedure using a tool in a much more smaller space. Patients have come back to surgeons saying that they have had a decrease in less blood, pain and trauma and a faster healing time than regular surgery.
