rOBONAUt 1 - wHAT IS IT?
The Robonaut is used in NASA to do jobs and tasks which are too risky and dangerous for humans to do. It is also useful in space to help humans do work in space and explore it as well. The Robonaut can eliminate robot scars (e.g. targets and special robotic grapples) and traditional on-orbit robotic tools with still being able to have many human abilities like a center-loop telescope control system. The Robonaut is used to do many different EVA (Extravehicular Activity) which were not specifically designed for robots to do.
The design was to have the robot do jobs which humans could not do and explore the construction and discovery of many things. The plan was to exceed the amount of things a suited astronaut can do and replace it with a Robonaut which will not get hurt as easily and is much are safer to use when completing very dangerous jobs in space. This is a product designed and created by NASA, DAPRA collaborations and help alongside with JSC Engineers.
The Robonaut has two versions (R1A and R1B). They had many different ways to be used including Zero G Leg, RMP and Centaur 1 all in which can be used in many different ways. (For example; The Zero G Leg helped out by working on the Space Station. The robot would climb the external rails to be able to attach his Zero G Leg to a WIF socket.)It first started in 1997 with it being officially designed in 1996 with it being designed to not have so many specialised tools but have the same ones as what astronaut’s use in space.
